The Israel Numismatic Society is pleased to offer research, publication and travel grants from the Arnold Spaer Fund for Numismatic Research.

 
The grants will be made from the Arnold Spaer Fund which has been created by the INS with the help of the Spaer Family. The Society together with the Spaer family representative may modify the requirements and the sums offered at its discretion.
1. One annual Research Grant up to the sum of $10,000 (in two yearly installments) or two grants of up to $5,000.
2. Occasional grants towards the publication of monographs in the INS series Numismatic Studies and Researches. The sum of the grant will take into consideration the projected costs of publication (translation, editing, typesetting, printing etc.). The grant may cover the entire cost or part of it, according to the circumstances.
3. One annual Travel Grant for participation in an overseas congress up to the sum of $1,000.
 
Approval Process
The applications will be appraised by a committee, currnetly including Dr. Danny Syon, Dr. Haim Gitler and David Hendin. In the case of the Publication Grant, also by the INR editorial board. The committee will recommend the grantees and the sum to be granted.
The committee is under no obligation to choose a grantee. The final approval is by the INS National board, and its decision is final.
 
Conditions
1. Research Grant: The research topic must be related to the numismatics of the southern Levant, as defined by the focus of the society's journal, Israel Numismatic Research (INR 1: p. 3: "Coinages circulating in the southern Levant...medals, tokens, metrology, sealings and minor arts related to numismatics"). The grant will serve to defray costs of traveling to research centers, collections and libraries and living costs during research and writing. Grantees awarded the entire sum of $10,000 will receive one half in the first year, and the second half in the second year, after providing proof of progress to the committee.
2. Publication Grant. This grant will be awarded to defray publication costs of a monograph in the special publications series of the Society: Numismatic Studies and Researches. The manuscript will be submitted for approval by the INR Editorial Board.
3. Travel Grant: This grant will serve to meet (full or partial) travel costs, registration, room and board to a congress of obvious numismatic interest where the applicant will present a paper or a poster. The congress must take place outside Israel. This grant applies to Israeli citizens or residents only.
4. Applicants must be members of the Society for at least three consecutive years, as established by proof of payment of annual membership dues. In special circumstances, the National Board may approve non-members for a grant.
5. An INS member who is not an Israeli citizen may apply for a Research Grant provided the research is conducted in Israel.
6. A grant recipient may reapply after three years from his or her last award.
7. If any member of the committee appraising applications for Spaer Fund grants should wish to apply for a grant, he or she must first suspend his membership in the committee for the entire period in which his/her application is considered.
 
Schedule
1. Research Grants: Applications must arrive before June 30 of the year. Publication Grants may be submitted at any time.
Travel Grants: Applications will be considered twice every year: for applications arriving by June 30 and by December 31.
 2. Acceptance or rejection letters will be sent to applicants within two months of the respective deadlines. For Publication Grants the response time will be determined by the progress of appraisal by the editorial board of INR.
3. The Bursar of the Society will make out a cheque payable to the recipients as soon as possible. Any taxes that may apply will be deducted from the sum. Publication Grants will be used to pay the expenses directly by the INS and the applicant will not receive money.

2. The applicants are required to provide the following documentation:
For the Research Grant: a. Research proposal, including the intended place of publication. b. A recommendation by a specialist, who is not a member of the comittee. c. If traveling, an invitation or confirmation from the host institution. d. A declaration of any other funding for the same research, including sums to be received and estimated total cost.
For the Publication Grant: One printed copy and an electronic version of the manuscript.
For the Travel Grant: a. Formal invitation/confirmation from the organizing committee. b. An abstract of the paper to be presented. c. The estimated total cost, and a declaration of any other funding expected for the same travel. d. To provide receipts supporting expenditures representing the full amount received upon return to Israel.
 
Obligations of the recipients:
1. Credit “The Arnold Spaer Fund for Research of the Israel Numismatic Society” in his or her writings, lectures or posters supported by grants from the Fund.
2. Present talks on the research in each of the Society’s three branches.
3. Offer a paper on the research to the Society’s journal INR for consideration for possible publication. In cases where the applicant is under obligation to publish elsewhere (e.g., conference proceedings) the INS will consider foregoing this requirement. The INR will publish the paper only if it is of a sufficiently high standard. This section does not apply to Publication Grants.
