1. Convocation: Mr. Robert Deutsch, Chairperson of Tel Aviv Branch

2.  Annual Report of the President of the INS – Haim Gitler

q       Thanks to Cecilia Meir for hosting the INS meeting at the Kadman Pavilion, Eretz-Israel Museum

·         Since the last AGM, on 17/03/2006, all of the institutions of the Society were reconstituted, and members were elected to fill positions in the Society (Chairperson, Secretary, Bursar, Scientific Advisor, INS board, Audit committee, Editor and Editorial Board).

·         Also in the last AGM, a proposed charter was unanimously accepted. It included approval to register the INS as an amuta.

·         Proposals were presented for changes to the Charter (see attached document). These proposals were unanimously accepted (with one abstention).

·         The President provided an update on funds raised from abroad. In the last months $ 9310 (US), earmarked for the journal, were raised.

3.  Financial Report of the Bursar – Mr. Yehoshua Zlotnik

·         The report covers 1/10/2005 through 30/9/2006.

The report includes the financial activity of the three branches, and the financial activity of the national INS board, which began a few months ago. The monies raised by the national INS board from abroad will also be used to maintain the website, to cover the costs of registration as an amuta, and the annual costs of international membership dues to the Commission Internationale de Numismatique (CIN)

4.  Announcement of Dr. Arie Kindler – one of the founders of the INS

·         Dr. Kindler requested permission to speak in order to recount the history of the Israel Numismatic Society, since its foundation by Meyshan, Kadman, Kaufman, Kindler, Pawel, Klimowsky and others.

·         Dr. Kindler particularly stressed the activity of the directors of the Society from its beginning until today. He commended Haim Gitler on the activity of the Society in the last year since becoming president.

·         Haim Gitler invited Dr. Kindler to put his reminiscences on paper.

5.  Report of David Farahdel – INS Audit committee

  • The committee began its work in April.
  • A financial audit has not yet been completed.
  • In the last three months there is activity in fund-raising abroad.
  • Another issue is the activity of the branches. Are they autonomous, with regard to fund-raising, attracting membership?

6.  INS Website – Danny Syon, builder of the website, and webmaster

  • All of the work was done on a volunteer basis.
  • As of today there were 1049 visits to the site.
  • The website is an excellent tool for passing on quick information to the members of the Society.
  • The website is a wonderful platform for expressing opinion, posting scientific and popular articles. Danny will also edit the latter if necessary.
  • Danny Syon invites the members to submit articles, abstracts of their lectures at the branches, in order to have them posted on the website (dsyon@ins.org.il).

7.  INS Journal (Israel Numismatic Review) – Editor, Donald T. Ariel

  • Donald thanked all those whose many efforts contributed to the preparation of the journal.
  • After six months of intensive work, the manuscript was submitted to the Old City Press. An example of the coverand abstracts of the articles was passed around.
  • The first volume includes sixteen articles and three book reviews.
  • The Editorial Board and its working procedures were presented.
  • The journal will be published annually.
  • INR 2: the process of collecting new material has already begun. Two articles have been received and fifteen more are already promised.

Shraga Qedar: Is there room for two numismatic journals to be published in Israel?

Donald T. Ariel: The national INS board and the INR Editorial Board are exploring ways for there to be only one Israeli numismatic journal, but the solution has yet to be found.

Dan Barag: Arthur Houghton and David Hendin claim there is only room for one journal, and on that basis they gave their support to you. Also, the members of the INS were not consulted as to whether the INJ should be discarded. The current situation is untenable.

Robert Deutsch: Claims there is room for two Israeli numismatic journals. INJ 15 (Meshorer festschrift) was originally intended to be published as two volumes. So there is enough material for two journals. What is needed is cooperation.

Shraga Qedar: Internationally, there is room for two journals. A compromise could be to divide the periods covered by the two journals: one from the Persian through Roman Provincial periods, and the second from the Byzantine through modern periods.

8.  New Numismatic Publications – Haim Gitler

  • The new publications that have seen light in the past months were presented to the members.
  • Professor Dan Barag is to be commended on the publication of INJ 15 in memory of the late Ya`akov Meshorer.
  • New books: Ya`akov Meshorer, The Third Side of the Coin; Haim Gitler and Oren Tal, The Coinage of Philistia of the Fifth and Fourth Centuries BC. A Study of the Earliest Coins in Palestine; Oren Tal Archaeology of the Land of Israel in the Hellenistic Period. From Tradition to Innovation, which includes a chapter on coins.

9.  Guest Lecture by Stefan Heidermann (University of Jena, Germany): The Renaissance of the Cities in the 12th century in the Middle East and the Change in the Monetary System

  • The lecturer was introduced by Robert Kool.
